Certified Quality

The Manuka honey industry uses the Unique Manuka Factor (UMF™) grading system to measure and communicate the potency, authenticity, purity, shelf life, and freshness of Manuka honey.

Each honey is then given a UMF™ MGO score indicating the level of methylglyoxal (MGO) present in the honey, with a UMF™ of 5+ being the base.

Methylglyoxal is the naturally occurring compound responsible for the unique antibacterial properties in genuine Manuka honey.

A higher UMF™ and MGO rating tells you there's a higher level of these beneficial properties in the honey.

PURITI jars score UMF™ 15+ and snap packs UMF™ 10+, you know each spoonful is packed with Manuka magic.

FAQs

Your questions answered

What's so special about Manuka honey?

Manuka honey is produced by bees pollinating and collecting the nectar from the Manuka flower (Leptospermum scoparium) native to New Zealand. The honey produced from Manuka flowers is quite dark, viscous and bears chemical traces of the plant harvested.

What are the benefits of Manuka honey?

Not only is Manuka honey delicious, but it comes with a bunch of added health benefits. Manuka honey contains high levels of the naturally occurring compound methylglyoxal (MGO). This bioactive ingredient has been linked to specific antimicrobial properties. MGO is thought to be the major contributor to Manuka honey’s non-peroxide activity.

When should I use Manuka honey?

Use Manuka honey for a little extra flavor in your coffee and as a substitute for artificial sugars and sweeteners.

How much Manuka honey do you recommend in a serving?

As with all kinds of honey, while Manuka honey offers various potential health advantages, it's still a form of sugar and should be consumed in moderation as part of a balanced diet. We recommend a teaspoon a day.

Does Manuka honey taste like regular honey?

As you may know, honey flavors can vary. We think Manuka honey is even tastier than regular honey as it's slightly "earthier" but on the whole, it's still got that irresistible natural sweetness.

Is this honey raw?

Yes, PURITI Manuka honey is 100% raw and completely unpasteurized.

How do you store Manuka honey?

Manuka honey should be stored away from direct sunlight, not exposed to direct heat, and never frozen. Manuka honey also doesn’t expire; it will last well beyond its best-before date if stored properly. We recommend consuming your honey within three years of opening for health and safety purposes.

A lot of people claim they're selling Manuka honey. How do I know this is the real deal?

You're right, the benefits of Manuka honey have catapulted into the mainstream in recent years, but there are stringent rules on what counts as true Manuka. To be classified as Manuka, New Zealand's Ministry for Primary Industries provides a complete evaluation before handing down an MPI certification to honey that meets their standards (like PURITI!)
