To celebrate International Coffee Day, we sat down with our co-founder and resident coffee connoisseur, Dave Phillips, and his wife, Mara, to hear more about why it's such a major part of their lives — and For Wellness.
FW: In your view, is coffee an indulgence or a necessity?
Dave: I consider it both. Coffee in the form of a special single origin made as a pour over with something like Haraz Ref Coffee from Yemen would be an indulgence. My morning cup of Coffee with The Good Stuff would be a necessity.
Mara: I agree with Dave that it is both. I've had the best coffee, 100% Kona, and I've had to endure coffee in many places (i.e. airplanes). I've always found that a little Good Stuff goes a long way in making it better.
FW: What's your philosophy on coffee as a tool for better health and performance?
Dave: It is both, but these are a few of my favorite functions: increased alertness through caffeine, enhanced physical performance, antioxidant properties, which can help combat oxidative stress and inflammation, improved mood, cognition, and metabolic support.
Mara: We were recently on a trip abroad and a sign was on our street that said 'One day you might miss today'. It resonated with my philosophy of carpe diem "seize the day" - my day always starts with coffee. :)
FW: What's your guilty pleasure when it comes to coffee?
Dave: My coffee guilty pleasure is a simple Cortado or Piccolo, double espresso with the same amount of steamed milk. Done right, it's smooth and delicious.
Mara: Usually, I have one cup — that’s why I make it the healthiest possible. I will add a bit of Manuka honey and oat milk to TGS original and not feel guilty.
Happy International Coffee Day, For Wellness fam!
